On Monday, March 20, the Center for Innovation brought together Rev. Dr. Janie Spahr, Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith Jr. and Annanda Barclay to dialogue on the intersection of justice issues.

Dr. Spahr is an LGBTQ rights pioneer, helping shape the PCUSA into one of the most inclusive denominations in the country. Dr. Smith Jr. leads Allen Temple Baptist Church, a legendary institution that has played a prominent role in the work of civil rights. Annanda Barclay helps lead More Light, an organization that works for the inclusion of LGBTQ individuals in churches across the country.

A crowd gathered online and in person at First Presbyterian Church Palo Alto to listen and think about how issues of race, gender, sexual orientation and environmentalism are deeply interconnected. The three ministers explored these issues from a spiritual perspective, highlighting the role churches have in working across justice lines.

Questions submitted by viewers shaped the discussion, and brought out issues of inclusion, church diversity, historic harms and gentrification. Panelists tackled these topics head on, with a spirit of honesty and optimism. The evening included several moving moments, many laughs and an energy that inspired the crowd to future action.
