On Monday, February 27, the Center for Innovation in Ministry brought together Rev. Dr. Herman Waetjen, Rev. Dr. Eric Elnes and Rev. Dr. Yolanda Norton to discuss how the Bible is significant in life today.
Dr. Waetjen is professor emeritus at San Francisco Theological Seminary, and spent his career exploring the Gospels with revolutionary insight. Dr. Elnes is a Pastor at Countryside Community Church in Omaha, Nebraska, a biblical scholar, speaker and author of The Phoenix Affirmations, Gifts of the Darkwood, and more. Dr. Norton is an associate professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary, specializing in Old Testament studies and womanist readings of ancient texts. The conversation was moderated by Dr. Zach Flanagin of St. Mary’s College.
The conversation took place at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, and was streamed online. The dialogue was shaped by questions submitted by listeners, and explored questions of violence in scripture, historical harms done in the name of scripture and what to do with the Bible in the current political and cultural climate.
